Day one: 11/17/1999 Started paddling about 11:00 am. From the riverside park area of the Tar river in Greenville, NC. We both packed about 200 pounds of supplies (food, water, camp equipment) It was a relaxing day of downriver paddling (river moving about 2 miles an hour). Our first stop was to eat a late lunch at a small shoal in the Yankee Hall area of the tar. Pressing on (slowly today) our next stop was at an old boat ramp/dock between Yankee hall and Grimesland Bridge. We unloaded some of our trash from the boats and pressed on. Crossing under the Grimesland Bridge. We then decided to camp about 2 miles from Washington on a sandy shoal (very small). The water ended up encroaching on our campsite a little, but with no problem. It was around 35 degrees and I was a little cold and slept little. Eric used his emergency blanket and was fine. |
