Day two: 11/18/1999 Today we paddled past Washington (under the Washington bridge (hwy 17) and under a Rail Road Trestle. Washington is very nice from the water. It is actually the area that the Tar River turns into the Pamlico River. We stopped at Whichard Beach (an RV park area) to buy a few more supplies and eat lunch. It was an odd place with an old waterslide and it resembled places you would see in old movies where a family would go to spend weeks during the summer in their RV. We then paddled further into the Pamlico River to a spot just east of Harris Creek, but west of Durham Creek. This was just around the east bend from Core Point. From this spot you could hear the roar of the fertilizer plant 2 or so miles away to the east. It was a wooded campsite and I slept better (utilizing my emergency blanket as Eric did). It was a long day of paddling (over 20 miles) and Eric stayed 100 yards away for part of the journey. My arms were not quite there yet. |
