Day five: 11/21/1999

Today we woke up to a very nice day, and again got our stuff together and cleaned up the site.  We ate breakfast at Hobucken Marina and thanked them again for the hospitality.  They said we were the first two tourists to visit the marina.  We paddled from there back over to the Intracoastal waterway, and down to Gale Creek and across the Bay River to Maw Point.  A barren salt burned (from hurricane Floyd) 100 yard by 15 yard archipelago shaped island facing the Pamlico sound.  This was the first time we had been in the bay thus far.  It is like an ocean in itself.  We decided to stay on Maw Point that night rather than trying to brave the paddle across the bay with only 3 hours of daylight (this proved to be a very smart move).  The campsite was nice, though we experienced some rain before bed time, it did not adjust our spirits.  I built a chair out of rope I had brought and driftwood.  Eric used his poncho to keep the fire dry so we could enjoy the early evening with a fire.  At this point we were the furthest we had been from civilization and possible help.  It is nice to be able to say that I spent the night on Maw Point, I'm sure not many people have.  Eric found a skull (of a rodent) and a military sign that had washed up.
